Before bringing the baby home you set up where it will sleep and you have all bathing and clothing necessities.
The same goes for your puppy. You should make the decision of where you are going to set up the designated area, whether indoors or outdoors.
If indoors then you should have the spot separated from the rest of the house and laid out with paper.
If you do not make sure you learn how to potty train a puppy before you get him then you should definitely do it the moment you bring him home.
It is preferred to do it before though. This is because it is best to start the training the moment he gets out of the car.
You do not wish for him to pick up any bad habits of relieving himself anywhere other than the place you designate as his spot to go.
The moment you get the dog home, take him out for a walk or show him his area in the yard or home.
You know he is very excited or maybe even fearful and nervous, depending on his personality, so it is practical to assume that he has to go.
Learning how to potty train a puppy before you get him home prepares you for these issues. If you wait until after you get him home, then you will start him off on the wrong foot.
Many people bring the dog in the home the moment they get there because they are just so happy they got a dog that all they want to do is love and play with him. This is ok if the designated area is indoors, but make sure you take him to the spot first.
If the spot is outdoors then you should let him get used to the yard first and wait for him to go. Then you can allow him in the home and love him as much as you want.
Learning how to potty train a puppy before you get him home only prepares you for all and any other type of training methods before you get the chance to start confusing the pup.
